About Us / West Gold Editorial

Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco

West Gold Editorial is based in San Francisco, but we happily travel to work with clients throughout the U.S. and around the world.

Having written for, edited, launched, and managed publications for nearly 20 years before founding West Gold Editorial in 1994, we know what it takes to make a magazine, website, book, or app successful. We call it smart content.

What is smart content?

It’s information, resources, and experiences that are intelligently conceived, executed at a high level, engagingly packaged—and aimed squarely at the needs of your audience as well as those of your business.

We’re ready to help you build smart content into every level of your product, from refining the big concept to suggesting SEO-savvy headlines, from dreaming up magazine departments to testing the user-friendliness of your website, from researching readers to coaching editors.

Because there are only two of us at West Gold Editorial (Susan West and Michael Gold), we work in a flexible, personalized manner. We don’t swoop in and take over; we don’t impose cookie-cutter solutions. We work as colleagues and coaches with you, your managers, and your staff. We figure out what you need.

And because we understand the big picture—that editorial must work within a business model and as part of a visual package—we can connect you with expertise in those areas as well. We frequently work with a variety of Web design and development pros, with publishing business consultants such as John Sheehy, Lou Ann Sabatier, and Jim Tucker, and with design experts such as Kim Baer, Robin Terra, and George McCalman (who created our snazzy logo) to deliver a complete package of services.

Our clients include media giants, specialized publishers, professional associations, membership organizations, and non-profits. Find out what who we’re tracking and what we’re thinking about: Follow us on Twitter and Facebook, and sign up for our e-newsletter.
